Where to shop for the best and most affordable area rugs
You may have noticed that it’s gotten much more challenging to buy area rugs in carpet and flooring stores. That’s because most of these stores have discontinued showing these items in their store. It’s just not cost efficient for them to use this space in their stores for area rugs and there’s too much competition online (where you have more variety and can buy area rugs for a much less expensive price).

So, I thought I’d help guide customers to find the best places to buy area rugs online. After all, it’s much less expensive and you have more variety in colors, styles, sizes, shapes. Plus, you can have the items shipped directly to your door (and yes, most of these places have free shipping and allow you to return them if you’re not happy).
Pro Tip: If you are really feeling unsure about whether you like the carpet color or softness, consider buying a small entry mat (e.g. 2 ft x 3 ft). That way, you can see and feel the “sample” without spending a lot of money. And, worst case you can use as an entry mat by any of your doorways.
And, due to popular request, I’ve added a section at the bottom where you can buy round area rugs.

Where to buy round area rugs
Round area rugs seem to be in higher demand these days, and yet they are rather challenging to find. I’m guessing part of that is because they are more expensive to make.
Round area rugs can work in many areas. Sometimes, they are just perfect for entryways (pending on the shape of the entryway) or as a focal point in a room. And, round rugs work especially well underneath round glass tables.
So here are the best places to find round area rugs online. If you click on the links, you’ll be taken to a refined search.
- Amazon. Here are a couple of my favorites on Amazon.
Wayfair also has some great selections of round area rugs. Here is one of my favorites.
WestElm has a few round rugs, but there selection is a bit limited. Search for round rugs here.
Crate&Barrel has a few round area rugs. You can see them here
Pottery Barn has some braided round rugs. So if you are looking for these for a kitchen or a beach home entryway, they may be perfect. But, if you are looking for more traditional area rugs, skip this one.
Bloomingdale’s has a wide selection of round rugs. Most are traditional. You can find them here.
Overstock has many round rugs, and they even have some that are roundish with some interesting edges. Note: some of the pictures in the search show rectangular versions of the carpet, but they are also available in a round shape. You can find their round area rugs here.
Area rug pads and why they’re so important
Do not forget to buy an area rug pad (no matter how soft you carpet is). Area rug pads serve many purposes:
- Prevent scratches in your floors (as well as color bleeds)
- Prevent rugs from slipping
- Provide extra comfort, softness and warmth
- Help your area rug last longer.
Here’s a great area rug pad I’d recommend, and you can buy it on Amazon. It’s much better for your floors and area rug vs some of the thin ones that don’t really do much.

Really great information and tips, thank you for sharing.
Anne – Thank you so much. I really appreciate that.
I bought a 7’10” X 10′ for my hardwood floors. I ordered a all natural rubber and felt pad recommended for hardwood. The cut the pad one inch smaller all around so that carpet touches all around. The carpet has a rough backing. I am afraid this 1 inch will scratch my floor. Any suggestions?
I’d say your best bet is to get a new area rug pad…get one that is larger than your rug, and then cut it to size.
By the way, normally the padding is cut smaller, but this may too much…IF you have a rough bottom on the area rug.
