Agreeable Gray, the Ultimate Neutral Greige Paint Color

Why Agreeable Gray from Sherwin Williams goes with everything!

When it comes to neutral colors, one of my favorites it Agreeable Gray. Why? Well it’s the perfect greige blend that perfectly balances gray and beige for a soft warm gray. And, it absolutely goes with everything. My customers love it because it just works.

Agreeable Gray from Sherwin Williams - Neutral Greige Paint

Agreeable Gray, made by Sherwin Williams, blends warms and cools together, and this mixture is close to magical because it complements both warm tones and cool tones in the room.

Agreeable Gray is the perfect greige paint and goes with everythingWhether it’s furniture, area rugs, floors, hardware, paintings, window treatments, they all work together with Agreeable Gray. It’s the glue that holds everything together. It is so interesting to watch my customers’ eyes widen when I show them the color sample. It seems to be perfect and just blends with what they already have.

After all, I don’t want my customers to feel like they need to buy additional pieces of furniture when they decide to paint the walls. The goal is find a paint shade that goes with your current home decor.

Oh, and it’s important to note that because Agreeable Gray is so neutral (and so likeable), it’s often one of my top choices if you’re looking to put your house on the market soon (or in the next 2 to 3 years).

What is greige and how do you pronounce greige?

As the name implies, greige is a mixture of gray plus beige. Agreeable Gray (SW7029) basically a warm gray. Gray is currently the most popular paint color, but over time, many have shifted away from cool grays as they believe it makes a room feel too cold (both physically and psychologically.

Now, most of my customers are trending towards warm grays because they are a super solution. They read as “gray,” but they are a bit softened and warmer, so they create a friendlier and more open atmosphere.

A very common question I hear is “How do you pronounce Greige?” Is it with a long A, like “gray” or a long E like “ease?” Well select “play” below and you’ll find out.

Well now you know the correct pronunciation for greige. By the way, the voice on the video reminds me of the guy that says “Laurel” in the Laurel/Yanny audio that went viral. I wonder if it’s him.

Agreeable Gray coordinating colors for accent walls

Accent walls have become trendy and in the right shaped room, they can look awesome. Sherwin Williams makes it easy, if you use their paint swatches (they are color coordinated).

First, choose the main wall color you want for the room. Then, move down the color strip to find a coordinating deeper shade. On most color cards, 2-4 shades darker will work and on some strips you can go up to 5 shades darker. (It will vary a bit vs the color you select.

pick the perfect paint shade

The one thing you DON’T want to do is pick something that is 1 shade darker. If you do this, it will usually look like you made a mistake (or just a shadow). Instead, be purposeful and make sure there enough of a contrast.

For Agreeable Gray (SW 7029), my top 2 choices are Mega Greige (SW7031) and Keystone Gray (SW7504).

If you want to go even darker, check out Warm Stone (SW7032), Brainstorm Bronze (SW7033) and Status Bronze (SW 7034). You can see all of the color hues on this swatch.

Agreeable Gray undertones

In my opinion, Agreeable Gray is one of the cleanest paint colors with virtually no undertones. It’s one of the purest combos of gray + beige. If you look really closely, you may notice a very slight taupe undertone and perhaps the tiniest smidge of purple.  This is why the color tends to coordinate with almost everything.

The LRV (Light Reflective Value) is 60 meaning that it adds some life to a room with the light it reflects back, and it’s one of the lighter gray/greiges. It’s light enough so it doesn’t take over the room.

And, because of this, it’s a great paint color choice for northern exposure rooms.  It does tend to look a bit more gray in these rooms.  And, the warm gray and greige balance out the cool sunlight.  Importantly, it has a chameleon quality and can work in all rooms as it adapts to the lighting and furniture.

Agreeable Gray goes with most hardwood floors

Agreeable gray is one of those rare colors that goes with most flooring shades.  It works incredibly well with dark hardwood floors, most light floors, and it’s one of the rare paint colors that works with cherry colored hardwoods (as well as brown stains that have red undertones.

It’s probably not the best choice for gray hardwoods (gray on gray usually looks bland and often clashes).  But, it can work well with whitewashed flooring.

Revere Pewter vs Agreeable Gray

Revere Pewter (from Benjamin Moore) is one of the more popular paint colors. Revere Pewter is much more beige than Agreeable Gray and it’s a bit darker. The LRV (Light Reflective Value) of Revere Pewter is 55 vs Agreeable Gray is 60, which means Agreeable Gray reflects more light. (The higher the value, the more light is reflected…a pure white would be 100 and a pure black 0).

revere pewter from Benjamin Moore Agreeable Gray goest with everything

Revere Pewter is much warmer and almost looks like a tan/beige combo compared to grays and greiges, and the color difference is quite striking when you compare them side by side. It also seems to come out much darker on the walls than you would expect. Some customers even call it a muddy color.

Revere Pewter vs Agreeable GrayIf you have warm colors in the room (e.g. reds, oranges, yellow, light oak furniture/floors), it can bring out the green undertones in this paint shade. The color seems to shift based on lighting and furniture and what’s shining through the windows.

Revere Pewter used to be more popular than it is today. I would say its peak was probably around 3 to 4 years ago. Many realtors and stagers recommended this color for selling your home. But, over time, beige has become very dated, and now Revere Pewter (which is a very beige greige) looks rather dated.

Agreeable Gray is much more neutral and fashion forward, so I would recommend that over Revere Pewter 9 times out of 10. It seems to be much more versatile vs. Revere Pewter. It has a lighter and more crisp look.

Agreeable Gray vs Accessible Beige

In some ways, these two colors are inverses of each other. Agreeable Gray is a mix of gray with beige and Accessible Beige is a beige with a hint of gray. Accessible Beige (SW7036), as the name implies, is a beige with a subtle taupe undertone to cut out the yellow so it doesn’t look too tan. It’s much warmer than Agreeable Gray.

Accessible Beige is a tad a darker as the LRV is 58 (vs 60 for Agreeable Beige).

Repose Gray vs Agreeable Gray

First, let me say that I love Repose Gray, and it’s a great option if you’re looking for a greige or warm gray. Repose Gray is a bit more gray than Agreeable Gray. So it’s cooler, but still on the warm gray side. Repose Gray is a tad darker than Agreeable Gray, but the difference is barely perceptible (58 LRV for Repose vs 60 for Agreeable).

Worldly Gray vs Agreeable Gray

Worldly Gray is rather similar in tone to Agreeable Gray, but it’s slightly more beige. It’s slightly darker too as the LRV is 57 (vs Agreeable Gray is 60). It’s a great alternative, but personally I prefer Agreeable Gray as it has a bit more gray in it and tends to complement more colors in the room.

Which contrasting colors work with Agreeable Gray

Sherwin William’s Agreeable Gray works particularly well with white trim, blues, greens, turquoises and neutral color schemes.  It’s versatile and doesn’t take on a blue or green hue when you use those colors for accents (as most gray paints do).  It’s great for modern farmhouse decor, too.

Paint Samples

Now, let’s talk about samples…

It’s always best to test the paint colors in you own home and own lighting. The colors do look different pending your lighting and can even look different room to room.

You can definitely go to your local painting store to buy some samples (and a brush…be sure to paint with 2 coats), but I have a MUCH EASIER way for you. Check out SAMPLIZE.

  • At $5.95, they’re more affordable than the samples/brushes/foam boards than traditional samples…and of course easier and way less messy
  • If you keep the samples on the white paper, you can move them from wall to wall and room to room

They are amazingly accurate as they are made with 2 coats of real paint, so they are color correct.

  1. Hello, your article was really helpful. Do u have a recommended interior door color that is popular that is in the greige
    Color?

  2. I have oak moldings throughouty entire house including crown. Struggling to move to grey but we really want to. We have accessible beige right now and tried repose grey in one room and it’s too light. Any suggestions?

    1. Becki – Yes, agreeable gray will work with both colors. But, personally, I prefer white cabinets are they make your space look larger and gives you more options for flooring choices.

  3. Help! SOS! 🙁 I have medium maple cabinets (seems to have a yellow undertone) in the kitchen, counter is black/brown/tad of grey, floors are light neutral and tile is tumbled stone beige and I’m seeing a pink undertone in them. One kitchen wall is shared into the family room which also has a full brick wall with a fireplace. Need a warm grey for the walls and thinking a tad darker on the brick wall? I thought I had my colors picked out but having second thoughts. Any ideas? I’m not daring just want to go neutral. Painter coming in a week. Thanks for any idea.:)

  4. I am considering Agreeable Gray paint for our living room. We ordered a charcoal gray sofa and loveseat, have black tile around the fireplace, oak trim, and black blinds. I have no idea what color carpet to select, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    1. Debbie – So first, yes, Agreeable Gray should go well with what you already have. I would still get a tester to verify. BUT, you need to make your carpet selection first, before you choose/finalize your paint color. I don’t know what sort of color you were thinking of for the floor nor how much foot traffic you get. If it’s not a lot of traffic, I do would do a very light color (like off white). You’ll need to look in person. If you are more concerned about dirt, I might do a light gray and then you will probably need to change your paint color to go with that. If you want to do a color color for the carpet, then maybe a lightish blue. I hope that helps.

    2. Hi, what are your thoughts on reducing agreeable gray @50%? I love the color but it seemed too dark in my home on the test patches due to pockets of shadows. I am thinking to still use it but @50%. Would that help me keep the color but make it lighter?

  5. Honestly, that was one of the best reviews and laid out information on “greige” paint. Love the comparisons to the other commonly referred to paint colours when decorating. I’m sold on using this for our new home – many thank!!

    1. Tanya – Thank you so much. I’m so super glad to hear this, especially as it took a while to put together. Agreeable gray is such a versatile color and in just works so well in so many homes.

  6. How does Agreeable Gray compare to Anew Gray? Do you know of any specific tile pairings with Agreeable Gray for Kitchen or bath?

    1. Agreeable gray is lighter than anew gray. they on the same palette. Agreeable gray has an LRV of 60 and anew has an LRV on 47 meaning it reflects less light (on a scale of 0 to 100). Theoretically, if you wanted to use anew gray as an accent wall, you could, but going one shade darker with mega greige would work better.

  7. Great information! We are prepping our home to sell and planning to paint. I believe Agreeable Gray will work very well in most of the areas, but a little concerned about our kitchen. We have oak cabinets. How do you think it will work on the walls with the cabinets? Thanks!

  8. Hi! Great post! Question, would you say that Agreeable Grey goes with Truewood Cream Wood Plank Porcelain Tile from Floor & Décor ? I had already chosen the tile when I saw this post but I love this color!

    1. Veronica – I don’t know that tile, so you’ll have to see. There’s a good chance Agreeable Gray will work as it’s very versatile, but either order a sample or go to the store and get one, or bring the tile to the store.

  9. Planning to use SW 7029, how would this looks with wood finish kitchen cabinets. Also what should be the carpet color that complements the SW7029.

    1. Ram – Yes, agreeable gray should work with wood cabinets, but still I would get a sample to validate it as there are many shades/tones with wood cabinets. For carpet colors, they will vary based on each line, but creams, greiges and blues should work. Make sure there is enough color contrast with floors and walls. if they are the same, it will look boring.

Oh, and I do want to point out that while Agreeable gray can work with wood color cabinets, it will look better with white painted cabinets…and this is true for almost all paint colors.

  10. Granite kitchen countertops are dark and light brown, some black and beige background. Floor is brown. Cabinets white. Will Agreeable Grey work for wall?

    1. Dianne – That’s probably due to the lighting as you’re getting a lot of grays in the sunlight. If “nothing” works, then maybe just try a white. Maybe one with slightly warmer tones. Try Alabaster.

  11. I have trim and wood blinds in my kitchen palace white #956 which can have a yellow to cream tone. DO you think agreeable gray will look good on the walls? ?next I have to choose a granite countertop. I’m leaning towards grays. I first chose revere pewter.

    1. Stephanie – Yes, I believe Agreeable Gray can work well with that. I only know Revere Pewter as a paint color, not a countertop. But, you’ll want to look at this carefully and probably choose it first…before your paint, and then see if Agreeable Gray works. A white counter top might be a better fit, but you’ll need to look at the colors together.

  12. Smitty from colorado

Thank you for the informative blog.
We have a lake house that I’m trying to update. It’s has ugly stained woodwork that I would like to paint. Would mega greige work at all with agreeable gray or is it always best to use a white tone for trim and doors? I want a warm cozy feel.

    1. Smitty – Can the colors work together? Absolutely! But it looks a bit cheap and dated to use use a non-white trim.

I would not worry about the staining. You MUST use a primer before you apply paint. The primer will cover the stains, regardless of they color you use. IF stains still make it though the primer, you may need to use a stronger primer. (see the one in this article.

  13. Will Agreeable Gray or Accessible Beige work with SW Alabaster for trim color? Also, is Accessible Beige as as versatile as Agreeable Gray? Having trouble deciding between the two…..

    1. Holly – Yes, both Agreeable gray and Accessible Beige can be used with Alabaster trim. Agreeable Gray is MUCH more versatile than Accessible Beige. No contest. Agreeable Gray is a greige so it works with both warm colors and cool colors.

  14. Thrilled to find you! Getting ready to paint a 1901 cottage (1,600 sq ft) all on one floor. My retirement home.❤️ I’ve been agonizing over best paint colors. Gravitate to Greige. Used Sherwin Williams last summer to ready house for the market (SW Greige can’t remember exactly which one). Also, used SW Sea Salt in master bedroom and 2 baths). Now I’ve retired and I’m in new/old home. Thinking Agreeable Gray living room, dining room, kitchen (wall between kitchen/dining room removed making nice spacious room), and a very long kind of narrow hallway. Plan to put white bead board half-way up wall in dining room. Had this in previous home with Greige walls in kitchen and it looked stunning. Question, please. The cabinets in kitchen are painted gray (old cabinets and some new). I’d say a dove gray. Should they be painted a white? I was sort of hoping I could get by without painting them. I’m not totally in love with shade of gray (although I do love gray cabinets), but think they would look striking with Greige paint on kitchen wall with some other color. The rooms get lots of light with big windows on either side. I’m installing white subway tile behind stove and under cabinets. The kitchen is now painted a dreadful dark olive green and dining room a chocolate brown. See you mentioned a Tricorn Black for cabinets for someone who prefers black to white. That sounds intriguing. I will use lots of splashes of color with blue & white transfer ware, reds, etc. that will pop and add pizazz. My previous home’s furnishings were always complimented by the gentle shade of taupe and white trim. I saw a mention of Ben Moore Revere Pewter, which I really love as it does go a little more toward taupe. I read another article, which was extensive, where they painted a good portion of their home with SW Agreeable Gray and stopped mid-stream starting all over with BM Revere Pewter because she thought it was warmer and not as “cold” as Agreeable Gray. She said once it was on the walls she didn’t love Agreeable Gray. I see you are a bigger fan of Agreeable Gray and not Revere Pewter. I’m was leaning toward Revere Pewter until I read all your postings here. Sorry to be such a blabbing blabbermouth. I’ve been agonizing over this wanting to make sure I get this right first time. Can only afford to do this once (especially since I just retired) and I want to love the look I end up with. Cannot thank you enough for advice. Stopping for now, but want to write more asking about bathroom and den. I am forever grateful! Kay

    1. Kay – Personally, I strongly prefer Agreeable Gray over Revere Pewter as it’s more up to date. It’s also more versatile when it comes to counter tops and appliances. But the truth is you MUST get samples to see what works best. So either get real paint samples or swatches or even order larger swatches from the companies. I do think that both colors will work much better with white paint, and if your cabinets are currently gray probably neither color will work. (but I can’t see the gray – you can).

      1. Hi Debbie, I messaged you on another post about painting a shared toddler room using SW Commodore on the ceiling. I had thought to use SW screen gray on the walls but forgot to mention I have golden oak laminate in that room. I’m not fond of comfort gray with the commodore, as the combo was used in the inspiration room I found using commodore for a night time sky effect. Which gray would best suit the commodore ceiling and light golden oak flooring? I realize now I need a neutral gray or greige…
I’m open to your blue grays or dusty blues also but don’t want too much blue. I plan to use white trim in SW, likely their white, white, I think it’s called. The boys are very young, 1 and 2 years, and will grow into their big boy room with these colors until I need to redo their room when they are older.
I appreciate your time. Your blog and articles have helped me a great deal with understanding color and finishes and have convinced me not to go with Behr so my efforts will pay off over the next several years. 🙂

This is a 12×15 northwest facing room, 1 window only.

        1. Angela – With Commodore (or any navy for that matter), you definitely want a cool gray, not a warm gray. I personally think that Gray Screen is the best choice. Others that may work would be Olympus white (lighter) and Passive. It think it’s just passive, but sometimes I call it Passive Gray. I hope that helps. And, sorry for delay. I’m more than 1000 questions behind.

          1. Thank you so much! I thought your reply to be quick. 🙂 I will choose a cool gray. Thank you again.

  15. I loved reading all of these suggestions. I bought a sample of agreeable gray today after choosing gray paints that pulled green.

My question is that my first desire was loving navy accents. Navy Pillows with gray walls. Will agreeable gray work for this?

    Thanking you in advance. Luann

    1. Luann – Yes, that can definitely work. But, you also may want to test Repose Gray as it will probably go better with the navy as it’s a tad cooler (but still a warm gray). I just published an article yesterday about Repose Gray.

  16. Janet Goetzke

I am going to be moving and plan to use Agreeable Gray for all of the rooms. In my current house I have an accent wall in my living room with the color “Pottery Red” from Behr and I love it. I would like to do the same in the new house, so I would like to know if this color would go with the Agreeable Gray or not. Thanks

    1. Janet – I’m not familiar with “pottery red” but I’m guessing it kind of looks like the “reds” they use at Pottery Barn. I would think that it would work with Agreeable Gray. You can also try Repose Gray if it doesn’t. Repose Gray is very similar but a tad more gray than Agreeable Gray. And, of course a plain old white can work.

  17. Louise Schuster

I am painting the walls in the house getting ready to sell. I like the Agreeable Grey but am wondering aobut trim color. I put white on the trim, but it seemed too bright. I have light oak floors. Would Snowbound SW 7004 work with Agreeable Grey? I like Snowbound as it has more cream color to it, but will it work?

    1. Louise – I would look into Alabaster first as it’s a bit warmer and works well with agreeable gray. We’ve often used the two together. Snowbound is a great color, but a bit cooler. I just think Alabaster will work a little better. But, see what you think.

  18. Love this article. My friend was trying to convince me to use the Revere Pewter over the Agreeable Gray. I am leaning toward Aggreeable gray. What color would or could I use on the ceiling? I have a two story foyer with trim ~ one foot from the ceiling. Not sure what to do with that space. My kitchen is Mega Greige and need to paint the ceiling too. Suggestions? Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, I strongly prefer agreeable gray over revere pewter..and most of my customers strongly agree when they see them side by side. For the ceiling, I would just do white…it’s often called ceiling white. very original. But more importantly, very practical.

  19. Hello! Amazing article, thank you! I want to ask for advice, if possible. I have a small apartment and I want to make it all Ageeble Gray, and for the bathroom I want to choose a combination of alabaster and dusty blue. Advise color for blue, please. Thank you!

  20. Thanks for helpful article. Is there a crisp white trim color from SW that you would suggest using with Agreeable gray?

  21. Hi Debbie!

We just painted our entire home agreeable grey with bright white trim and I couldn’t love it more.

Thanks so much for the helpful articles!

I can’t wait to feature it on my blog home reveal soon!

  22. Coffee is on its way! Seriously, such a helpful blog. Thank you.

We bought a new home which currently has yellow walls and a very large tiled basement, radiant heat, large tiles 24×24 in a mossy olive green color.. not my choice but I’m not changing the tiles ($$). I want to lighten the area, and love the Greige tones. Would agreeable grey clash with a green tile?? Or hopefully lighten it up?? Any other light Greige that may go more w green that might be lighter and more up to date than the yellow?? Happy to send a picture!
The bedrooms and bathrooms on that same floor have high white bead board throughout(same green tile floor) and I was hoping to paint the same color in those rooms above the bead board.. (contemplating painting the bead board and painting the lighter color above)
I wish you lived in Maine- not NY 🙂

      1. Sorry, this posted too quickly. test agreeable gray. it may work. You can also try Silverpointe which has more green undertones. Not sure if that will be better or worse as it depends on the green. Look at the color swatches first, and then from there you can buy 1 or 2 testers to confirm.

        1. Hi, what a great informative site this has. Thank you for your clear knowledge advice!
          My question is ,

Should every room in a home be painted the same color for continunity if possible?

Also, will Agreeable Grey work in bathrooms with Crema Marfil marble and Travertine stone?
Wondering if I would need to lighten it or just go to a white in those bathrooms?

Trying to update from beige walls in the whole home but still keep beige furnishings and stone.
          Thanks!

          1. Linda – The more you use the same color, the more cohesive you home looks. This is especially important in the common areas. But, if you want to go different in the bathrooms or bedrooms, that is fine.

I would think that Agreeable Gray could work with travertine and Crema Marfil but because both are natural stones, the colors may vary a bit, so test it to see if it works. You could also do a white or even test Agreeable Gray w/ 50% white to see which you prefer.

  23. I am doing agreeable gray on all of my walls. I’m using black leathered granite on kitchen countertop and alabaster on my kitchen cabinets with glaze. What color glaze would you suggest? Also, would pure white be a good trim color for trim near alabaster cabinets in kitchen and bath?

    1. Carol – Sounds like a great color combo. For the trim, you can either use white or Alabaster. I’m sorry, but I’m not familiar with glaze colors. But, in general, I prefer more subtle colors for glazing.

  24. Hi !
I am from The Netherlands and we don’t have Sherwin Williams here
And I really want to paint my house in the Agreeable Gray paint do you know any other paint brand that is the same colour, we do have Benjamin Moore brand . Thank you so much

    1. Laila – Oh good I’m glad you have Benjamin Moore available. They have the formula card for Agreeable Gray, so they can make it for you (at least they do here in the US at the BM stores).

  25. I have a 2-story great room with a lot of natural light. Would it be better to go with Worldly Gray or Agreeable Gray?

    1. Mary – Honestly, they can both work. Personally, I prefer Agreeable Gray, but it doesn’t matter what I think. It only matters what you think (and which goes better with your existing items). I would get samples for both and see which looks better in your room/your lighting.

      1. I really like Agreeable Gray too. I just wasn’t sure if it would look too washed out in a large room with a lot of natural light.

  26. Hi, I would appreciate your input. I had Gray owl walls which I liked, in kitchen, dining, living room and entry. white dove cabinets, quartzite countertops called Sea pearl, (doesn’t have any green in it) in leathered, that has a lot of gray in them. Painters came and mistakenly painted all walls agreeable gray. They did a fantastic job. I don’t hate the color but it’s warmer than what I’m used to. I don’t mind leaving it, but I can’t decide weather it looks good with the countertop? P.S. painters offered to paint It gray owl but with all the caulking they did at baseboards top of chair rail s etc. I doubt it would as good if they painted again. Thank you.

How would agreeable grey go with blue stain pine. We are doing an accent wall and maybe the floor in blue stain. Will it be to much grey tones???
