What is blue gray paint color?  What does that really mean?

best blue gray paint shades for bedroomsI consider blue gray to be primarily a blue color with gray undertones (or gray mixed in).  So they are more like dusty blues.  But, there are some others that believe it’s more of a gray color with cool blue undertones.  The truth is there is a range of color expectations when someone say blue gray or bluish gray or grayish blue.  So, I always need to double check with customers to probe what they really mean.

The best way to do this is show them color swatches and have them react.  Did they mean something like this, or did they want something more blue or more gray (or lighter or darker).

For that reason, I’m going to share a wide range of blue grays – ones that are more gray, ones that are more blue, lighter ones and darker ones.  i want to stress that there is no wrong answer here…it’s more a matter of what you prefer.  All of these colors can work pending on your style and purpose.  And, don’t forget that some of these colors can be used as accent walls (rather than all four walls.  The world is your oyster.

What are the most popular blue gray paints colors?

1.  Icy by Sherwin Williams

Sherwin Williams Icy SW6534 - light blue grayIcy (SW6534) is one of my favorites because it’s a light blue gray.  It’s perfect for bedrooms if you want a light neutral blue.  The gray undertones give it more sophisticated look (so you avoid the baby blue look).  And, it works for areas that even in rooms that don’t have a ton of light.

2.  Flower Box by Benjamin Moore

Flower Box Benjamin Moore CSP-530 tranquil paint color - blue greyI think this is my favorite Benjamin Moore blue gray.  It’s the perfect balance of the two for a true upscale look.  The one downside of this paint shade is that it’s only available in their Aura line. Aura is absolutely awesome – the best of the best – but it is a bit pricey, so it doesn’t work for everyone’s budget.

3.  Thundercloud by Behr

Behr Thundercloud blue gray paint color and grey blueWhile Behr is not my favorite paint brand, I absolutely adore some of their blues, and Thundercloud (S520-5) has got to be my favorite.  Every time I come across it on Pinterest I stop to take a look. It is so exquisite and soothing.  It’s another example of a perfect blend of blue and gray.  When you compare it to Flower box, it has super subtle green undertones and a bit less purple.  I love them both.

4.  North Star by Sherwin Williams

North Star from sherwin williams - gray blueNorth Star (SW 6246) is more of a cool gray with pale blue undertones.  It’s a very neutral color, so it works well for more masculine decor.  I love it with dark hardwood floors and a light/white area rug.

9.  Sterling by Benjamin Moore

Benjamin moore Sterling for a cool graySterling (1591) is a cool gray that’s super neutral.  This color is a bit tricky as it reads gray on the paint chip, but in real like it looks a bit more blue than gray once it’s on the walls.  it’s just the way the light reflects on it.  This is why it always make sense to get testers and put them on your walls so you can see the color with your lighting.

Tranquil blue from Behr - dusty blueTranquil Pond (PPU15-07) is another favorite.  It looks super similar to Benjamin Moore’s Flower pot, as well as similar to Thundercloud, but it’s a bit more purple.  So, it’s kind of like a dusty blue purple.

21.  Gentle Gray by Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore Gentle Gray -light gray blueGentle Gray (1626) is a light gray blue with an aqua undertone.  This color tends to shift based on lighting and the other elements in the room.  Sometimes it looks more gray, other times more blue and other times it looks like a dusty aqua.  The grays make it look more upscale and sophisticated than a typical aqua.

Blue grays from Behr

blue and white bedroom - blue walls and blue beddingWhile Behr isn’t my favorite paint brand, I will say that some of their shades are absolutely amazing, especially in the blue color palette.  You should know that both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore have formula cards for Behr so they can make them (as well as each others’ paint shades).  Here are some amazing Behr blue grays:

  • Thundercloud (S520-5)
  • Tranquil Pond (PPU15-07)

Frequently asked questions on Bluish gray paint colors

Do gray and blue go together?

Usually, they do.  In general, most gray paint colors are cool toned and most blues are also cool toned, so they usually work well together. Now, I’m oversimplifying a bit as there is a range of grays and some are warmer than others.  And, there are a range of blues with different undertones (some have greener and aqua undertones), others have purples and others have gray undertones.

But, usually, most blues and most grays work well together and this even holds for lighter blues and darker navy shades, as well as lighter and darker shades of gray.

What goes well with blue gray paint?

Often other blues (including navy) and most grays work well with bluish grays.  Certain greens and purples also play well with blue gray paint colors.  And, of course whites always work well. For base molding and trim, choose white whites, rather than creamy or warm white tones (see best white paint shades for trim).

greyish blue living room - shop the look

Both dark and light floors (especially hardwood) look great bluish grays.  For carpeting, creams work very well, as do blues and grays.

What accent colors go with blue gray walls?

If you’re looking for a a bright accent color to contrast with your gray blue walls, consider warm accent colors.  Many dusty roses, pinks, fuscias, and even lavenders will work well.  Also, soft warm oranges, golds and yellow will add some warmth. Some reds can work, but you need to be rather careful with these.  Orangish-yellowish colors are much easier to contrast as they are more complementary on the color wheel.

How can accents be used?  I love to accent colors on throw pillows, blankets, area rugs, wall art, accent pieces on coffee tables and occasionally for a small piece of the wall (e.g. book shelves, nooks/insets, in between shelving. Often a large accent wall can be too overpowering for a room with one of these bright pop colors.

Is it blue gray a cool color?

Absolutely.  Grays are cool colors and blues are cool colors, so the combo of these 2 cool tones results in cool color.

Is it blue gray or blue grey?

Both are correct.  Grey is the British English spelling and gray is the American English spelling.  So, both are technically correct, but pending on where you live, one may be preferred over the other and you will see differences in labeling from the manufacturers in different countries.  Some people call the color bluish gray and others grayish blue. Some call it dusty blue.  While the spelling may be slightly different, the meaning is the same.

Final thoughts on blue grays

As you can see, there’s a wide range of paint shades when it comes to blue grays.  I love this color combo because it combines two of my favorite colors – blues and grays.  Different people have different expectations when they say blue gray…or gray blue.  Hopefully, you can find at least 1 bluish gray that love…because that’s all you’ll ever need.

  1. Love the selection and range here. Do darker accent walls work in small spaces to help define areas? Or is it better to go for a light shade throughout in a studio or small 1 BR?

    1. Antonia – yes, I love some of the mid to darker blues, too. But, if you have a small apartment, I’d gravitate towards 1 color and slightly lighter. If you go too dark, it will make your space look too small.

  2. Would you keep the trim and doors a simple white color for most of these paints or would you try for a very, very light blue tint?

    1. Ruthmarie – I would definitely do white trim with these paint colors. It looks much cleaner and more upscale vs. tinting it blue. (And, yes, I’ve seen them done both ways). And, a white white is best for blue shades (rather than an off white).

      1. Thank you for the response. I like the idea of white trim as well. I have something of a followup question regarding white paint. When you say white, do you mean a hard bright white, or something a bit softer? There are so many variations on white.

  3. I really love the look of these paint colors from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore. I know that they are good quality paints, but was wondering if there are some basic differences between the brands.

    1. Grace – So glad you love them, too. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have great paints, so you can’t go wrong with either. They each have different grades, too. The good news is that you can get these colors at either store and they have the formula cards for each others’ paints (as well as most for Behr).

  4. When you paint the kitchen, what type of paint do you suggest. I really like that flat matte look, but I would think it would make the walls harder to keep clean. Is it better to settle for a low gloss/eggshell for areas like kitchens?

    1. Ruth – I think eggshell or shinier looks tacky and dated. Instead, you should upgrade the paint. If you’re using Benjamin Moore, use their kitchen and bath paint. If you’re using Sherwin Williams, then use Duration. Both are wipeable. I would probably do a matte finish in there, and by upgrading you won’t have a trade-off on cleaning vs looks.

  5. Hi, I am hoping you can point me in the right direction. Our family room has light wood floor, cathedral ceilings, 14×18 and one full wall has a 6ft wide floor to ceiling gray stone fireplace. I currently have a deep red, burgundy color on that as an accent and the 3 other walls are a khaki color. I want to change the red to Window Screen 4004-4a by Valspar and the other 3 walls maybe Tempered Gray 4004-1a. I am not sure and was hoping for your input

    1. Donna – Let me know if you want to set up a design consultation and you can send me some pictures. Please use the contact form. It’s impossible for me to help you without seeing this.

  6. We’ve gone for a lovely shade of grey on the feature wall in our living room. The other walls are white and they are a huge hit with any visitors we have in our home. Thanks for highlighting all the latest ideas and tips here.
Question: Would you make the floor a shade of gray too? Or should we stay with the light brown wooden floors that we now have? Wish I could add a photo here.

    1. Joleisa – So glad you’re happy with you paint colors. No, I would not do gray floors with gray wall…that would be too much gray and take away from the walls that are working for you. I would either do a form of brown or else natural with Bona Traffic so you don’t have yellow on the floors.

      1. Okay, now we are looking at one of your favorite blue/greys, Icy or Windy Blue. This is for paneling! Now what color carpet & type of paint?
We haven’t done anything to this room since 1996! Help!!!

  7. Patricia Littleton

My hall bathroom has a warm tan tile that goes up the wall halfway. However, I have switched my colors to a greige pallet. I used revere pewter be Benjamin Moore. Is there a blue that will go with the warm tan AND greige.

    1. Patricia – Oh yes, blues are opposite on the color wheel from tan, so most will work. My Benjamin Moore swatches are in the car, but w/ Sherwin Williams, Upward and Mild Blue should work well. Mild Blue in SW is almost the same as Misty Blue in Benjamin Moore. I hope that helps.

  8. Hello! I was wondering if you knew what color matched the example at the top where is says “Best blue gray paint colors” over the picture?

  9. Hello, I’m painting my 20 year old son’s bedroom. The room is decent size and there’s just a little white molding around three windows plus 4 white closet doors that basically take up one wall. Medium light brown wood floors and brown furniture complete the picture. I was initially thinking meditative by sherwin Williams but your color suggestions for sherwin seem better. Are Icy and dockside too young for this age? I want a little masculine but not too masculine and am looking at sherwin colors. I don’t want too dark either or it may be too dark in the room. Does it make sense to do an accent wall, am thinking probably not. Thanks!

    1. Beth – I think that both of those colors can work well. I would get samples of both and see which you prefer with the wood. Both are age appropriate. I use those in master bedrooms often.

    1. Yes, bedrooms are set off from the hallway, so it gives you permission to do whatever color you want in the bedrooms. Tan is neutral, so it also works. I’d go more towards the bluer end and less gray though.

  10. Hello, I am 28 years old and my bedroom is currently a sky blue colour. I was thinking of repainting it and installing new flooring as I have to renovate a north/ east facing wall.

    Option 1: Install linoleum flooring
    (I don’t know which hue to go with: beige/brown, gold/yellow or grey/black)

Option 2: I was thinking of a two-toned wall with:
    i) Alfresco by Benjamin Moore on the lower half.
ii) Honey Blush by Sherwin Williams on the top half.
iii) I was thinking of installing a white border wallpaper trim between the two colours.

    * I have a very small bedroom and my new queen bed takes up most of the space, I’m talking about a foot to a foot and a half on either side and half a foot at the end of my bed.

  11. Guylene Matthes

Hello….I have an east facing living room. I want to change the accent wall color to a blue gray. The other wall colors are a yellow golden color. Should the blue gray shade be a shade darker than the the yellow golden color? I can provide a photo. Thank you.

    1. I’d say that it’s more important to match the tones so that they work well together. Going a little darker or a little lighter with the blue can work. Blue is a complementary color to yellows/golds so most work well with either other, but you need to visually match. I’d probably go more bluish than grayish, though. I hope that helps.
